Pigmented Lesions

We offer many effective treatments for pigment removal in patients over a wide range of different skin types.  Lasers, RF, Plasma and Cryotherapy are treatment options often used to remove unwanted tattoos or permanent makeup, or to treat discolorations of the skin such as:

  • Birthmarks - this refers to a variety skin lesions present at birth and endure thru life.  While most are small and often overlooked many can be large and appear on sensitive areas such as the face, neck and hands.  They can be pigmented, skin colored or vascular in nature.

  • Age spots - also known as liver spots or medically as seborrheic keratoses.  These are generally more anesthetic concerned than a medical concern and can be treated with cryotherapy, topical acid treatments, shaving down or laser removal.

  • Sunspots - Sunspots, technically referred to as solar lentigines, are another form of brown skin lesions resulting directly from excessive UV light exposure, including tanning beds.  They are generally smaller than the patches of melasma and are very preventable if you avoid the sun and wear sunscreen when outdoors.  They can accumulate to cover large areas, though they do not necessarily smoothly coalesce.

    • Topical retinoids and chemical peels can treat these spots, in small areas or even covering larger areas.  Treatments can be gentle, taking longer to achieve your desired results or very aggressive, achieving the results in as little as one treatment, though discomfort and downtime are greater.

    • We have over the counter and prescription topicals available and offer Opus plasma, Harmony laser/IPL, LightStim red/blue LED light and Morpheus8 RF/Microneedling to treat these concerns.  Please see here for more information.

  • Darkening of the skin - also known as hyperpigmentation.  This is often the result of a significant injury or repetitive rubbing of the skin.   Like other pigmentation disorders this me treated with both topical creams such as hydroquinone, retinoid and other skin peel preparation.

  • Melasma - Melasma is a condition resulting irregular, sharply delineated brown patches on the face.  Deeper set lesions may appear for blue grey.  While it has several contributing causes, the mechanisms are not all well understood.  Light exposure, hormones and genetics all have been identified as contributing.  â€‹

    • Multiple topical treatments exist to lighten the skin.  These include hydroquinone, retinoids, Kojic or hydroxy acids and topical steroids.

    • Additionally, the Harmony IPL/laser, Pixel CO2, Opus and Morpheus8 all can treat this condition.
